Coiste Scoil Acla CCÉ has today, 18th September, expressed deep sadness following the passing of Mary Lavelle-Burke, yesterday, after a short but brave battle with illness.
Mary was born and raised on Achill and educated both in Achill and at St. Louis Convent, Kiltimagh.
After a career in the Ulster Bank and First Active Building Society she returned to G.M.I.T. and received a B.A. in Fine Art and Design in 2007 having had a passion for the arts all her life.
Over her career as an artist Mary’s work has been heavily influenced by her Achill upbringing epitomising the colours and sights of our beautiful island. Some of her works may be viewed here
Mary’s work in the community and her long association with Scoil Acla saw her become a committee member and then Vice-Chair of the organisation for a number of years, tirelessly working to help imagine the dreams and ambitions of the founding members of Scoil Acla.
Commenting on Mary’s passing, Cathaoirleach of Scoil Acla, Sarah Calvey said “Scoil Acla is deeply saddened to learn of Mary’s passing, she helped bring the organisation to what it is today.
“On behalf of the branch, I wish to offer my deepest condolences to Mary’s son, Eoghan, her sisters Celine, Ann, Nora and Valerie, the extended family and her wide circle of friends at this sad and difficult time.”
