The highly anticipated Scoil Acla Summer School returns to Achill Island from July 28th to August 3rd, 2024. This year’s festival promises to be yet another remarkable celebration of traditional Irish music, culture, language and heritage, attracting enthusiasts from near and far.
With almost 70% of courses already sold out, the 2024 edition is shaping up to be one of the most popular in recent years. As usual, participants will have the opportunity to engage in a week filled with immersive workshops, captivating performances and vibrant music sessions. This year, Scoil Acla is delighted to announce that it is the “Year of the Banjo” shining a spotlight on this beloved instrument and its significance in Irish traditional music.
Renowned Sligo banjo player and respected figure in the traditional music community, Theresa O’Grady, has been appointed as the Artist in Residence for Scoil Acla 2024 and follows a long line of distinguished artists.
Expressing her excitement, O’Grady remarked, “I’m absolutely honoured to be chosen as this year’s Artist in Residence at Scoil Acla 2024. The opportunity to be involved with this long-established summer school is both a privilege and a pleasure.”
O’Grady added, “I’m excited to collaborate alongside esteemed teachers and passionate students who share a love for our music and furthermore, to contribute to the rich traditions of culture that Scoil Acla represents. I will take great pleasure in sharing my banjo knowledge, advice, and guidance throughout the week with a few stories and many, many tunes thrown in for good measure.”
This year’s programme also includes a poignant event, “A Night for Noel,” in remembrance of the late Noel Kilkenny, a cherished Scoil Acla tutor and esteemed Mayo musician. The event will bring together friends, family, and students to honour Noel’s legacy and celebrate his contributions to the world of traditional Irish music.
Cathaoirleach of Scoil Acla, Sarah Calvey said: “Scoil Acla 2024 is set to be yet another unforgettable week of learning, music, and community. We are thrilled to welcome Theresa O’Grady as our Artist in Residence and to celebrate the ‘Year of the Banjo’ this year. Amongst our usual long-standing events, our ‘Night for Noel’ will be a heartfelt tribute to a wonderful musician and friend who left an indelible mark on all of us.”
“We are very much looking forward to welcome old friends and new to Scoil Acla 2024!” Calvey concluded.
