Scoil Acla, one of Ireland’s longest running annual summer schools, will begin from 25 July with online classes, virtual and outdoor events and competitions for all to enjoy!
The week will follow the traditional schedule of events with a virtual mass as Gaeilge from Pollagh Church with Fr. Tom Gallagher and opening welcome address on Sunday, Zoom classes will take place from Monday, with an extra masterclass for students with some of Ireland’s best tutors. The annual Hata Acla group competition is open once again this year, and groups are encouraged to get their entries in as soon as possible. This year, Scoil Acla will host a number of “Trad ar an Trá” music sessions and all are welcome to Keel or Dugort beaches during the week. The Scoil Acla recital will take place on Wednesday evening 28 July, featuring some of the best Achill and Mayo talent and will be broadcast on Facebook and on scoilacla.ie.
A series of historical walks with some local historians will also take place throughout the week featuring Kildownet, The Deserted Village and the village of Dooagh, where Scoil Acla was founded in 1910. Journalist Manchán Magan will give a brief online talk on his new collection of sea terminology “Sea-Tamagotchi” and on Friday 30, a wreath-laying ceremony will be held at the grave of Michael Moran, Slievemore Cemetery in memory of all those who fought in the War of Independence followed that evening by a concert which will be streamed online, featuring song, music and dance from Scoil Acla tutors. The week will end as it normally does, with the annual Aeraíocht and raising of the flag by John “Twin” McNamara and Paddy Ryan including some music from local musicians.
Cathaoirleach of Scoil Acla, Sarah Calvey said “the Summer School is undoubtedly the highlight of our year, unfortunately this is the second year we have had to put our classes online, but we’re glad to have a number of exciting events planned including historical walks, recitals, lectures, outdoor music sessions and our Aeraíocht (open-air concert).”
