Scoil Acla is saddened to learn of the passing of Paul Durcan, one of Ireland’s most distinctive and celebrated poets. Paul was our esteemed Poet in Residence in 2015, and his unforgettable reading in St. Thomas’ Church, Dugort remains a highlight in the festival’s history.
Paul’s contribution to Irish literature was profound. From his debut Endsville in 1967 to award-winning works such as The Berlin Wall Café and Daddy, Daddy, his poetry has left an enduring mark on readers across the world. A former Ireland Professor of Poetry and member of Aosdána, his accolades include the Whitbread Award for Poetry, the Lifetime Achievement Irish Book Award, and honorary doctorates from both Trinity College Dublin and University College Dublin.
Speaking on behalf of Scoil Acla, Cathaoirleach Sarah Calvey said:
“Paul Durcan was more than a poet, he was a cultural force who gave voice to the personal and political with honesty, wit, and compassion. We were honoured to welcome him to Scoil Acla, and his presence here left a lasting impression on all who heard him speak. We extend our deepest sympathies to his family, friends, and all who cherished his words.”
