We are delighted to welcome Noreen O’Sullivan to join us on this special 30 Anniversary of Scoil Acla for 2015. Noreen will be visiting all our music classes throughout the week, sharing her experiences and music with everyone. She will also perform at a number of our evening events and will be available for a couple of hours in the afternoons to chat and offer her expert advice
to those who would like to meet with her. Noreen is an acknowledged master of the tin whistle and her talent, particularly on slow airs, is legendary.
Noreen O’Sullivan was born in Corrandulla in County Galway, where her father, J.J. Gavin, ran a small thatched pub. Noreen has been playing music since the age of 5 and grew up listening to her grandmothers play concertina (Noreen is also an accomplished concertina player) and her parents playing fiddle.
Her brother, Sean, is a former All Ireland champion on the button accordion and has toured the US and Europe. Her younger brother is Frankie Gavin, the celebrated fiddle virtuoso, international recording artist and founder member of De Danann. Her sister, Marian, is also an accomplished accordion-player. Noreen has been teaching music in the Connemara Gaeltacht for over 30 years. She is a music examiner for the syllabus in Irish traditional music, SCT, run by Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann and has tutored music teachers in their Teastas i dTeagasc Ceolta Tíre (CCTT) program.
