Scoil Acla CCÉ is delighted to announce it has secured the backing of Coiste Mhaigh Eo – Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann to hold the Mayo Fleadh Cheoil in Achill in May 2020.
The Scoil Acla Committee submission to host the event was voted on at a meeting of the Mayo County board of CCÉ last year.
Scoil Acla will be celebrating 110 years since the founding of the original school in 1910 and 35 years since its revival in 1985. Each May, one of sixteen Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann branches in Mayo plays host to the event. The 2019 Mayo Fleadh Cheoil took place recently in Foxford, hosted by Admiral Brown CCÉ.
Commenting on the news, Cathaoirleach of Scoil Acla, Sarah Calvey said “this is wonderful news for Achill. Our strong musical and cultural tradition will stand us in good stead to host the 2020 Mayo Fleadh Cheoil. We expect that well over 1,000 music and dance enthusiasts will visit Achill in May 2020, during which hundreds of contestants will take to the stage in competitions in Irish music, song, dance, language and storytelling.”
Achill last held the Mayo Fleadh Cheoil in 1991 and 1996 respectively.
“In organising our annual Scoil Samhraidh in July of each year, we are supported by the local community, with many giving of their time in a voluntary capacity – we consider ourselves fortunate that we will be able to call on this support or “Meitheal Acla” to ensure we stage a fantastic Fleadh Cheoil Mhaigh Eo in 2020.” concluded Sarah.
Scoil Acla is a branch of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann which is the largest organisation involved in the preservation and promotion of Irish traditional music – A non-profit cultural movement with hundreds of local branches in Ireland and across the globe.
