Scoil Acla Events
Scoil Acla is a year-round organisation working with our local and national partners to foster our musical culture, support artists and provide an excellent standard of teaching in traditional Irish music, dancing and the arts. Our ethos is “Tríd na Glúnta” – “Through the Generations” and we work hard to ensure that our students reach their full potential and excel in their chosen field.
Local classes
October – February
Scoil Acla believes in the old Irish saying “Mol an óige agus tiocfaidh sí”
Our ethos lies in ensuring that local children across the parish of Achill receive top quality tuition in their chosen instrument and are given the tools to succeed and enjoy their music.
A range of instruments
Scoil Acla employs local tutors to teach both children and adults across a number of disciplines including Tin Whistle, Accordion, Concertina, Flute, Fiddle & Guitar.
Classes in winter & Spring
Classes usually run for 5 or 6 weeks, in two terms (Winter & Spring classes) every Wednesday night.
Seachtain na Gaeilge
March
Scoil Acla celebrates Seachtain na Gaeilge from 1-17 March each year. We stage a number of events including live music, local national school art competitions and conversational circles!
FÉILE IDIRNÁISIÚNTA
Is féile idirnáisiúnta Ghaeilge í Seachtain na Gaeilge, atá ar an gceiliúradh is mó dár dteanga agus dár gcultúr dúchais a bhíonn ar siúl in Éirinn agus in go leor tíortha eile gach bliain.
DEIS DO GACH ÉINNE…
Tugtar deis do gach éinne sult a bhaint as an nGaeilge tríd a bheith páirteach san fhéile, idir chainteoirí dúchasacha, fhoghlaimeoirí agus lucht an chúpla focal ar aon, trí fhéilire imeachtaí siamsúla agus spraíúla a chur ar fáil do gach cineál suime agus gach aoisghrúpa.
Scoil Samhraidh
July / August
The highlight of the year is the Scoil Acla Summer School which takes place in July every year. In 1910 the first Summer School was established, and the event has been run every year since its relaunch in 1985.
Celebrating over 35 years
In 2020, Scoil Acla celebrated 35 years since its revival in the summer of 1985. The vision of the original founding members and those who revived Scoil Acla are alive and well in the organisation today.
The finest tutors
Scoil Acla is proud to host some of the country’s best traditional music artists as performers and tutors.
Culture Night
September
Culture Night / Oíche Chultúir is an annual, all-island public event that celebrates culture, creativity and the arts.
Connect Through Culture
On Culture Night / Oíche Chultúir, arts and cultural organisations and venues of all shapes and sizes, from independent studios and art-spaces to national cultural institutions, extend their opening hours to allow increased access for the public.
Join the culture bus!
Scoil Acla takes to the road on our Travelling Bus of Culture and make our way around venues throughout Achill!
Set Dancing
November-March
Scoil Acla runs set-dancing classes throughout the winter with over 20 participants each week.
Enjoyed all over the world…
Set dancing is probably Ireland’s most popular form of traditional dance, and can be enjoyed all across the country and in many places around the world.
Keep Active – Dance!
Scoil Acla’s classes can be enjoyed by young and old and are a great way of keeping active during the cold, dark winter months!
